Week of August 20th

Good Morning Parents!

Welcome to the new blog. This is a great way you can keep track of knowing what your scholars are doing in the upcoming weeks.

Word Study:  We will continue whole-class instruction this week with a word list that reviews vowel patterns.  This is the lesson and homework pattern – Monday new words are introduced, and scholars will receive their weekly packet.  Homework is to define 12 words on Monday; write 11 sentences on Tuesday; find 15 words in text Wednesday; write each word in the sort 3 times on Thursday.  On Friday is the pretest, and everyone is going for a 100%!  Any words missed must be written 10 times each over the weekend and the final test is given Monday.  THIS WEEK’S WORDS:  VVC – chief, fruit, brief, scout, groan, stain; VC – wrap, twig, when, plot, clog, quit; VCC – smell, sharp, thank, front, climb, trust; VCe – whine, theme, brave, scale, phone, quote.

Reading:  These readers are thinkers!!! This week scholars will continue to choose new books for their book bins from our amazing classroom library on their group’s designated day!  Independent Reading Levels are being identified, and all scholars should now be reading books at their level.  Each night, please ensure your child is reading at least 30 minutes.  Please look for the Daily Reading Response Sheet in the Homework Folder and ensure it is completed and signed each night.  This will be checked daily and will be part of the quarterly reading grade.  The primary focus this week will be Writing Reading Responses.

Science:  We are learning about the scientific method.  We will review on Monday, and there be a test on Tuesday.  Please ask your child about the 7 steps!  The young scientists have completed observations of rotting apples, and measuring water, soil, and cotton on a triple beam balance scale!

Math: We will be identifying and describing certain polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals. Scholars will be able to identify solid figures and their properties and relationships with plane figures. In small groups scholars will be working with teachers on certain learning goals they may have missed on their inventory test from last week.
