Word Study:  This week we are studying adjectives and adverbs.  This class has gone from GOOD to BETTER to BEST!!! 

Reading:  This week during Reading Workshop, scholars are being introduced to the Fiction Story Elements such as setting, characterization, problem and solution, etc.  You may notice the Reading Log question prompts relate to these features as well.   During Comprehension Strategy skill practice, we are focused on Non-Fiction story elements and how they help us understand our reading.  Be sure you are reading 30-45 minutes nightly with a just-right book!  Remember, scholars can borrow books from the classroom library as needed.  Please let us know if we can help you help your child in this area.

Science:  We are studying Electricity this week, and having hands on labs and computer time each day in the classroom.  The vocabulary terms for Unit 4 are due this Friday, and there will be a quiz next week.

Math: Scholars are mastering multiplication and division. We will be working more on order of operation. They need to drill in their heads PEMDAS- Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. They should be able to tell you what each letter stands for (in mathematic terms). We will be having a test on this on Monday, October 29.

Please make sure your scholar goes on Learning Odyssey every night. Work on the reading and math folder. Do not worry about Science folder. We will cover that in class

Week of September 24

Reminders

Science – We continue our study of Physical Science as we move from Simple Machines into Matter and Magnetism.  There will be experiment demonstrations, hands on lab, and a quiz on Thursday.

Reading – Please continue encouraging nightly reading of 30-45 minutes, and remember to sign the Reading Log!  We are studying the Monitoring Comprehension reading strategy.  This means scholars are training themselves to stop and fix-up their reading as soon as they realize they are distracted, confused, or otherwise not thinking about what they are reading. 

Math- Scholars will be able to write and evaluate addition and subtraction expressions. Also scholars will be working in small groups based off their MAP RIT score based off of Number Sense. Please have scholars go to the website http://www.sowashco.k12.mn.us/ro/Pages/studentlinks/map/ to continue working on their RIT goal.

Week of September 10

Reminder

Scholars will be going on a field trip on Monday, to the Holocaust Museum. The cost is $5.50.  We will be leaving at 9am and will return around 2pm. Please have scholars wear school uniform. This was an incentive trip, so for those scholars that have not been turning in their homework, they were not allowed to attend this field trip.

On Friday, September 14 we will be going to the Science Museum. Please make sure scholars turn in that permission form by next Wednesday.

Progress Reports

Progress Reports are going home on Friday, September 7. Please go over the grades with your scholars. As we can see BAS and MAP is a great portion of our scholars reading and math grade. Scholars should be a reading at level P and scoring a 200 or above on MAP Reading. They should be scoring a 204 or above on MAP Math. We really are trying to push your scholars above and beyond so your help is greatly appreciated.

Last week scholars were working on place value all the way to the billions! Their math brains are really doing well. On the test we had 3 As, 14 Bs, 7 Cs, and a couple below. Please continue to study for your test and making sure all your homework is complete.

Word Study

 This week we will introduce our Vocabulary lesson in place of the Word Study list.  Homework will consist of skill practice on nouns rather than the usual word study homework.  Scholars will become familiar with the vocabulary lesson pattern of two mini-lessons and a quiz.  We are targeting the specific vocabulary concepts based on MAP data.  Next week, we will resume the regular word study in addition to vocabulary.

Reading

 This week, readers will increase their awareness of reading metacognition . . . thinking about their thinking!  Scholars who are below reading level are required to read 45 minutes per night and scholars reading at or above grade level will read 30 minutes.  All scholars should complete their nightly reading log which parents should sign.  It is imperative that scholars are reading at their independent reading level.  Scholars can borrow books from our library as needed.  Please let us know if we can help you help your child at night.

Science 

We are excited about our field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry on Friday!  We will be preparing with activities during the week.  We are also completing our first unit on the scientific method so we will review and take our test this week.  Scholars will continue observing and recording data about our rooting plants, and we have ongoing science labs going on in the classroom.

Week of August 27th

Academics

Science:  This week we will continue our focus on the Scientific Method, and will do a lab to help practice our predicting skills.  We are also learning about Safety in the Science Lab.

Reading:  Great job reading each night for 30 minutes and completing and signing the Reading Log!!!  Keep it up.  In class, the Reading Response notebooks will be used to record our thinking.  Scholars will learn about the rubric and their schedule for turning in their weekly responses.

Word Study:  This week we our list focuses on words with  –ing endings.  Words are as follows:  get, getting, ask, asking, swim, swimming, rest, resting, yell, yelling, run, running, sit, sitting, stand, standing, pick, picking, shut, shutting, pass, passing, jump, jumping.  The homework pattern is as follows:  Day 1 -- Write 11 words and their definitions on loose leaf.  Day 2 – Write 11 sentences, each at least 7 words long, in the Word Study packet.  Day 3 – Write 15 words that have the same spelling pattern which were found in daily reading, and write the sentence in which you found the word, in the Word Study packet.  Day 4:  Write each word 3 times each, on loose leaf.  Day 5:  Write any words missed on the pretest 10 times each, on loose leaf.

Writer's Workshop:

Scholars will continue working on their writings. They will learn how to look at their narratives and distinguish what is a seed and what is a watermelon. Our goal is to try to get scholars to make their writings "seed" moments.

Math:

Scholars will begin Chapter 1. On Monday scholars will be able to read, write, and identify the value of whole numbers. On Tuesday, scholars will be able to read, write, and identify the place value of whole numbers through hundred thousands. On Wednesday, scholars will be able to read, write, and identify the place value of whole numbers through millions. On Thursday, scholar will be able to use a benchmark to give meaning to a number. And on Friday, scholars will be able to solve problems using an appropriate skill such as use a graph. 

Homework This week

Word Study: 

Monday -- Write 11 words and their definitions on loose leaf.  

Tuesday– Write 11 sentences, each at least 7 words long, in the Word Study packet.  

Wednesday – Write 15 words that have the same spelling pattern which were found in daily reading, and write the sentence in which you found the word, in the Word Study packet.

Monday is gym day!  Please send your child in their red LEARN shirt and grey sweat pants and gym shoes every Monday.
